Monday, June 1st: Mad Scientist – Fun Hat Day!
Our class will be conducting a group, virtual science experiment. We will be discovering together how to make our very own ice cream, using at home ingredients!
Don’t forget to wear your silliest hat or headband to our meeting!

Ice Cream in a Bag:
INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup half & half or milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon sugar
1/3 cup rock salt
3 cups of crushed ice
1 gallon size freezer bag
1 sandwich size freezer bag
Duck tape or masking tape (optional)

DIRECTIONS1In a larger gallon-size freezer bag, mix salt and ice.
2In the sandwich-size freezer bag, mix together half & half, vanilla, and sugar (and cocoa powder if making chocolate ice cream).
3Seal sandwich-size bag tightly. If you have tape, use the tape to give this bag extra protection by taping over the seal. Next you can place inside the gallon bag.
4Seal gallon-size bag tightly, and shake for about 5-10 minutes until mixture is frozen. Take turns shaking the bag. This is the perfect opportunity for a kid helper but consider using gloves or a kitchen towel because the mixture will be cold.
5Rinse the smaller bag off gently with cold water before opening to clean off any salt water. Eat right from the bag or scoop into a bowl or a cone.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:For chocolate ice cream: 2 teaspoons cocoa powder + 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Tuesday June 2nd, Beach Day!
We will be reading a fish counting book: Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood. While I am reading the book, you will be drawing a picture of some fish you might find in the ocean or even just a beach scene and enjoying your snack.

Wednesday June 3rd, Sports and Games!
Come to class dressed wearing your favorite sports attire. You will be drawing a picture of your favorite sport (basketball, football, baseball, soccer, fishing, skating, riding bikes, bowling, swimming, hockey, golf, etc.) You can add anything to do with the sport in your drawing! Examples: football field, baseball diamond, bases, goalies, fishing pole, etc. I am asking that, on this day before our meeting, you and your child create an obstacle course in your yard! Get creative, but know that it does not need to be complex! During our meeting, children will have the opportunity to show us and complete their obstacle course.
Example: Start here. Run towards and jump over the broom lying in the yard, then run to the toy truck, run around it two times, roll over to driveway, STOP, jump up and run through the chalk lines on the drive way, skip to the swing, give it a push and end at the deck… whatever you want. Have some fun and be prepared to explain the steps before your child completes the course.

Thursday June 4th, Talent Show and Dance Party!
This is a special day to celebrate everyone and their talents! Think of something you want to show your friends. It could be a dance, a picture you made, or even some magic tricks! Maybe you have an instrument you like to play or some funny jokes. It’s up to you! We will be joined with Miss Rachel’s class to do the talent show and dance party!

Finally, I would like to celebrate the end of this year with a “We did it!” party! Please make and decorate a sign or poster before this meeting that reads, “We did it!” Come with a special snack and get ready to do some dancing!

cupcake liner

glue stick
pencil
scissors

Activity (Procedure):
With your pencil, trace your hand on any color of paper you would like. Then with the scissors cut out the hand print. Cut the cupcake liner into a semicircle to fit the palm of the hand and glue it on. Lastly, glue on the eyes on the palm of the hand.

Activity Wrap Up:
Watch the video first then ask questions like, What color(s) are Jellyfish? What size is a Jellyfish? Where is the mouth on the Jellyfish? etc.

How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment)
Is your child able to trace their own hand without any assistance?

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you have any kind of ribbon, they can add the ribbon to the bottom of the jellyfish to make the tentacles longer.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If you don’t have paper, you can use stop and shop paper bags or newspaper and just color it whatever color you want your Jellyfish to be.

paint the branches different colors. While the paint is wet, if you have glitter, sprinkle the glitter on your branches to make it look sparkly.

*Barring a few exceptions, octopuses have eight arms and no tentacles, while squid and cuttlefish have eight arms (or two "legs" and six "arms") and two tentacles. The limbs of nautiluses, which number around 90 and lack suckers altogether, are called tentacles.

Materials
*32 green grapes (4 grapes for each arm)
*1 granny smith apple (for the body)
*A small box of raisins (for the eyes and to make a mouth)
*plastic knife (with adult supervision)
*plate

Activity (Procedure):
Place your apple on the plate, take your knife and cut your apple in half starting from the top of the apple. Make 8 arms around the head of the octopus with 4 grapes on each arm.
Take the raisins and make eyes and a mouth.

Activity Wrap Up:
Watch the video first then ask them questions about the video like, How many arms does an octopus have? Do octopus change colors? Why do they change colors? What are the circles on their arms and what do they do? etc.

you can cut an orange in half and they can use that as well for the body and also blueberries for the legs.

Black and yellow paint Stripes)
white paper (wings)
googly eyes
glue stick
scissors

Activity (Procedure):
make a black and yellow striped pattern around the toilet paper roll.
When you are done painting the stripes, let it sit and dry.
While you are waiting for the paint to dry, take your paper and cut out wings for your bee.
Finally, after the paint is dry, glue the eyes at the top of the toilet paper roll, close to the edge of the toilet paper roll.
Then glue on the wings on the back of the toilet paper roll.
Lastly, cut out antenna for your bee and glue them on from the inside of the toilet paper roll, behind the eyes.

Activity Wrap Up:
After watching the video, ask your child questions about the video like, How many body parts does a bee have? How many legs does a bee have? How many wings does a bee have? ect.

Materials
1 toilet paper roll
googly eyes
scissors
black paint
white paper

Activity (Procedure):
Start by cutting 4 slits on each side of a toilet paper roll…there will be extra in-between them so cut them off. Try to make them level so the stamp will be more even on the paper. Fold the legs so the spider looks like it’s doing a split.
Dip the ends into black paint and stamp it on a piece of white paper. Glue on some googly eyes to make it look like a spider.
With the leftover toilet roll you can also make more spiders! Just paint it black and stick on some googly eyes.

Activity Wrap Up:
Ask your child, what do spiders like to eat?

Is your child able to cut out the legs of the spider? Is your child able to pick up the googly eyes, put glue on it and glue it to the spider's head?
