Lesson: Bees
Purpose: Bees ( like ants ) have 3 parts: head, thorax, abdomen. 6 legs and wings Make your own bee with materials from home.
Theme: Insects
Learning standard:
Prek L51 Compare using descriptions and drawings the parts of an insect and explain functions of some observable parts
Learning outcomes: I would like the children to learn the body parts of a bee by creating one themselves.
Motivational techniques: See image below
Procedure: 1. Cut a circle ( 3in. Diameter ) and a thin oval ( 6in. Long ) out of cardboard
2. Paint a toilet paper roll and the circle black
3. Paint the thin oval with black and yellow stripes
4. Cut 2 thin slivers across from one and other into the toilet paper roll
5. Do the same thing on the other side of the toilet paper roll
6. Slide the circle ( head ) into one side of the toilet paper roll
7. Slide the thin oval (abdomen ) into the other side of the toilet paper roll.
8. Now you have the head, thorax ( Toilet paper roll ) and abdomen of your bee put
Put together
9. Glue 6 paper legs to the thorax
10. Glue 4 white tissues ( wings ) to the top of the thorax
11. Add eyes and antennas to the circle for the head.
12.glue a small black triangle to the back of the abdomen for the stinger
Materials: Toilet paper roll, cardboard, paper, paint or markers
Wrap up: Can you name the parts of a bee?
Assessment: You can paint the whole bee or color it with markers. If you have googly eyes put them on your bee.
Modifications: If you want you could make the whole bee using just paper
Helpful Hints: If the head and abdomen don’t stay on you could use glue or a glue gun.
