Lesson: Bees

Purpose: Bees ( like ants ) have 3 parts: head, thorax, abdomen. 6 legs and wings Make your own bee with materials from home.

Theme: Insects

Learning standard:
Prek L51  Compare using descriptions and drawings the parts of an insect and explain functions of some observable parts

Learning outcomes: I would like the children to learn the body parts of a bee by creating one themselves.

Motivational techniques: See image below

Procedure: 1. Cut a circle ( 3in. Diameter ) and a thin oval ( 6in. Long ) out of cardboard
                   2. Paint a toilet paper roll and the circle black
                   3. Paint the thin oval with black and yellow stripes
                   4. Cut 2 thin slivers across from one and other into the toilet paper roll
                   5. Do the same thing on the other side of the toilet paper roll
                   6. Slide the circle ( head ) into one side of the toilet paper roll
                   7. Slide the thin oval (abdomen ) into the other side of the toilet paper roll.
                   8. Now you have the head, thorax ( Toilet paper roll ) and abdomen of your bee put
                       Put together
                   9. Glue 6 paper legs to the thorax
                   10. Glue 4 white tissues ( wings ) to the top of the thorax
                   11. Add eyes and antennas to the circle for the head.
12.glue a small black triangle to the back of the abdomen for the stinger

Materials: Toilet paper roll, cardboard,  paper, paint or markers

Wrap up: Can you name the parts of a bee?

Assessment: You can paint the whole bee or color it with markers. If you have googly eyes put them on your bee.

Modifications: If you want you could make the whole bee using just paper

Helpful Hints: If the head and abdomen don’t stay on you could use glue or a glue gun.
