Lesson/Activity Name: Cloud Writing
Overall Purpose: Hi Families...The children can practice making letters, shapes and numbers in puffy clouds made from either shaving cream...or whip cream.
Monthly Theme: Weather
LESSON
MA Guidelines/Learning Standard(s):
F.K. 1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Learning outcomes The children love to use shaving cream in the classroom. Shaving cream comes in all different types of scents (even unscented). Shaving cream is great for washing tables.
This week we have learned that clouds come in all shapes and sizes. A little bit of shaving cream goes a long way. Have fun creating and watching the smiles and hearing the giggles! : )

Cloud Poem (see attachment)
Materials:
Shaving cream (foamy)
Whip cream (if you want to eat your clouds when you are finished)
A plastic tray or a cookie sheet
child’s fingers (or a Q-tip).
ruler, sponge or spatula (if doing directly on the table: to help with clean up)
Activity:
Lay a tray or cookie sheet on the table
spray a dollop of shaving cream or whip cream on top of the tray.
Have your child flatten the dollop and then start creating (letters, drawings, numbers, shapes, etc.)
Activity Wrap-up: Was it fun? What drawings were made? Did they make shape, number or letter clouds?
How do I know what my child is learning? Can they share with you what they made? Did they make upper and lowercase alphabet letters, numbers, shapes and were they able to identify them by name?
How can you extend this activity: Move the activity into the bathtub while using shaving cream (shaving cream is soap..so it will just rinse off). Can you make dollop clouds in the tub? Will “clouds” form on the bathtub wall? shower curtain? Can you write your name and form a name cloud? If you get the gel shaving cream..you can write with it, then it will foam up! : )
Helpful Hints: Shaving cream is just foamy soap.
