Lesson/Activity Name: Bucket Filler
Overall Purpose: Can you fill your bucket of kindness by the end of the day?
Theme: Kindness
Learning Standard(s):
SEL5: The child will display empathetic characteristics - create social stories describing how someone might feel when… (e.g., exclusion, hitting, etc.).
SEL7: The child will demonstrate the ability to communicate with others in a variety of ways. - encourage children to share ideas, feelings, experiences, and perspectives in whatever communication mode they can.
SEL12: The child will demonstrate the ability to reflect on and evaluate the results of his/her actions and decisions. - make connections between actions and consequences (i.e., describe how their actions or behaviors affected others)
Behavioral Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
To have the children spread and show kindness at home towards adults and/or siblings. Keeping track of everytime they say something kind is a good way to show more and less. If the bucket is filled to the top then they are extremely kind, if the bucket isn't all the way filled, then that's okay, they can work on being more kind the next day. Always striving to be the kindest person you can be.

Procedures: (Step by Step how to do the activity)
Wrap-up:
How many times did you show kindness in order to fill your bucket?
Ask the child, “what ways can you show more kindness tomorrow so we can fill your bucket all the way up?”
Assessment:
Children need practice in the process of reflecting on their experiences, which can be done after, or during activities (e.g., talking about what they are doing and why, considering possible next steps, and evaluating the effectiveness of their decisions/choices). Adults can support and facilitate reflection by “scaffolding” development of skills, first by helping children complete challenging tasks, and then by gradually stepping back to let children manage the process independently and learn from their mistakes, as they are ready and able to do so.
Modifications:
If you can not find a bucket, you can draw a bucket on some paper. When your child does something kind you can draw a star on the bucket, or put a sticker on the bucket.
Helpful Hints:
If your child is having an “off” day you could talk about kindness and how to be a bucket filler. You can give scenarios, examples; “If mom dropped some clean laundry what can you do to help her?” “If grandpa fell outside how can you help me?”
