Overall Purpose: Counting the letters in the word Kindness

PK.CC.4 Count many kinds of concrete objects and actions up to ten, recognizing the “one more”, “one less” patterns, using one-to-one correspondence, and accurately count as many as seven things in a scattered configuration.
Behavioral Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
The child is able to count the letters in KINDNESS and their own name. Then they are able to compare and contrast what word has more letters, and what word has less letters.

Wrap-up:
Can you identify the bigger number? if so , what number is it?
Assessment:
Count concrete objects for a meaningful purpose (e.g., three crackers for snack; two eyes to glue on the bunny; three steps down to the playground)
Count the letters in KINDNESS and the letters in your name
Modifications:
Use another family member's name if the letters in your name are equal to the amount of letters in KINDNESS. Example: MOM, DAD, GRANDMA, GRANDPA, SISTER, BROTHER, etc.
Helpful Hints
If you can not find small loose part items to count with, Example; coins, then you can just draw/color dots next to your name and the world KINDNESS

Procedures: (Step by Step how to do the activity)
- Write out child's name
- Write out the word KINDNESS next to child's name
- Have the child count each letter in each word. Example: KINDNESS = 8 letters, JULIA = 5 letters
- Count out 8 loose part items for the word KINDNESS (example; 8 coins), then count out 5 loose part items for the word JULIA
- Write out the numbers 1-10
- Find the number 5, and 8
- Ask the child “what number is bigger, the 5 or 8?” or “what number has more coins?”
Materials:
- Paper
- Marker/crayon
- Small loose parts. Example: Dry beans, coins, lego pieces, small rocks, pom poms, recycled yogurt tops etc.
