Our Lesson for the Week! Transportation

What is our theme? Clothespin Airplane!
What is the lesson (overall purpose)?
To become familiar with airplanes and learn about force
and motion.
MA Guidelines/Standards:
D66.Toddler explores sensory art material and uses them for visual effects.
D69.Toddler creatively explores and experiments using a variety of sensory materials and art mediums.
Pw34.Toddler controls small muscles in hand.
Learning Outcomes:
I would like the child to learn about airplanes and what their function is? Talking about how they can be different or the same. This is a great way to work on fine motor skills.

Materials:
Clothespin-Paint-Scissors
3 flat Popsicle sticks-Paint
Small Paint brush-Glue
Activity (Procedure):
Have the child paint the clothes pin their favorite color.
Cut Small strips of tape and place onto the flat popsicle sticks. Glue the popsicle sticks onto the clothespin at the top,and underneath (looks like wings).Then glue the last popsicle stick at the bottom of the clothespin on top. Experiment flying your plane either inside or out? Now you have your very own Plane!
Activity Wrap Up:
What can you identify about your plane? Talk about different parts and what helps the plane to fly?
How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different materials to discover the different outcomes? Does using different materials have a different effect on the plane as it flies?
How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If the plane does not fly,you can change the wings,by moving them to another area on the plane.
Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If the popsicle sticks do not stick to the clothespin, use tape to help strengthen them.
