What is our theme? Acts of Kindness!
What is the lesson (overall purpose)?
Acts of Kindness BINGO! A fun way to encourage children to be kind and show empathy for others.
MA Guidelines/Standards:
SEL5: The child will display empathetic characteristics. [demonstrate awareness of others’ expressions of feelings (both verbal and non-verbal).] [predict others’ feelings, responses, and behavior (e.g., what will happen if…?), and make decisions accordingly.]
SEL7: The child will demonstrate the ability to communicate with others in a variety of ways. [engage in meaningful and reciprocal interactions with others throughout the day]
SEL8: The child will engage socially, and build relationships with other children and with adults. [form and maintain increasingly close and nurturing friendships (e.g., show loyalty, demonstrate concern for needs/wants of particular children).]
Learning Outcomes:
I would love for the children to become more aware of the ones around them, and how their actions can make others feel good, or bad, happy, or sad! I would like the children to engage in meaningful connections with family members and friends. I’d also love for the children to learn that being kind and doing kind things for others feels really good.
Songs, Books & Videos (Motivational Techniques)
A Little Spot of Kindness Book by Diane Alber https://youtu.be/F7BSYHq3oI8
An Inspirational Video “Kids Explain Kindness”
https://youtu.be/cFmZV5THGYc
Materials:
Printable Acts of Kindness BINGO board and “I am Kind” playing pieces. (In color and/or black and white.)
Tape to stick playing pieces to board. (Optional)
Activity (Procedure):
Print out your BINGO board and “I am Kind” playing pieces, have your child practice their cutting skills by cutting out each “I am Kind” square.
Children should place an “I am Kind” playing piece on each Act of Kindness BINGO square they have completed! When they get five in a row, horizontally or vertically, they get to shout, “BINGO!”
Extra points to fill the whole board! (You could hang it on the wall and do this throughout the week.)
Activity Wrap Up:
How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment)
Ideally you will read aloud each act of kindness from the BINGO board for your child to hear. Throughout the day, or week, you will notice your child attempting to accomplish these acts of kindness and may even ask for your help to do so. You can always go back to the board for more ideas!
How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
You could extend this activity into an everyday or every week project, Kindness Hour, or Kindness Friday. Make time to do things for other people; bake a pie to leave at your neighbors’ door, make a big sign to put in your yard thanking our first responders for their hard work, etc.
Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If BINGO fails, it’s okay, it can be hard to keep children focused on a piece of paper. Instead, choose a couple ideas from the BINGO board and encourage your child to try them. “Let’s make a goodie bag for our mail man/woman.” or “Let’s call Grandma and Grandpa!”
