Purpose: Ants live in colonies and work together like a family.
Theme: Insects
Lesson 1 An ant colony has 1 Queen ( Her job is to have the babies )
2 An ant colony has many worker ants ( They go out and get food, take care of the baby ants, protect their colony,
clean thecolony )
Learning standard: Compare using descriptions ( ant colonies and human families )
Behavioral objectives/learning outcomes: I would like the children to learn that Ants and families like ours work together to make their homes a safe place to live.
Motivational Techniques: Video Below (Children learn About The Ant)
Song Below - “ The Ants Go Marching One by One”
Procedure: Draw your house like it is underground. Where is your room? Where is the queen? Give all the people who live in your house a room. Decorate it. What other rooms do you have? Kitchen, garage, bathroom etc.; Then put yourself and you family members in you house/colony
Dip your finger in any color paint and make a fingerprint for the people in your house. Don’t forget to add 6 legs!!!
Pets count too!!! THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO DO THIS!! Let your children express themselves.
Materials: Paper crayons markers,paint
Wrap up: Talk about how your family works together. What jobs do you have? Think of some new jobs you can do to help around the house!
Assessment: Now imagine if you were the ants ( small ) And the ants were you (big) How would you want the big ones to treat you!! Bet you won’t smoosh an ant again or another insect!! Draw a picture of a big ant then put your tiny self in the picture.
Helpful Hints: You can create your home/colony on your living room floor with boxes, blocks.and the people/ants can be anything you want!! ( raisins, cotton balls, etc.)
