This lesson is making a Zoo Diorama but also reinforcing the letter recognition & the sound of the "Z"
Purpose: To reinforce the Z sound
Theme: Letter of the week
Learning standard:
F.PK.2. With guidance and support, demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
F.PK.3. Demonstrate beginning understanding of phonics and word analysis skills.
Learning outcomes:
c. Identify the initial sound of a spoken word and, with guidance and support, generate several other words that have the same initial sound.
a. Link an initial sound to a picture of an object that begins with that sound and, with guidance and support, to the corresponding printed letter (e.g., link the initial sound /b/ to a picture of a ball and, with support, to a printed or written “B”).

Motivational techniques: The View At The Zoo by Kathleen Long Bostrom (Read Aloud Posted Below)
Materials: A shoe box, magazines, paper and markers, pipe cleaners or sticks
Procedure:
1. Cut animals out of magazines or make your own animals
2. Turn your shoe box on it’s side and glue all the animals to the back of the shoe box
3. Then add pipe cleaners or sticks to the front of the box. ( you can make holes on the
4. Top and bottom of the box so it looks like a cage
Wrap up: Talk about your favorite animals. If you’ve been to a zoo talk about your experience
Assessment: Zoo begins with the letter Z.( Name other words that begin with Z )
Extensions:
If you were an animal at the zoo, what animal would you be and what would you want your cage to look like. Draw a picture of your cage ( You can have anything you want in your cage! )
Helpful Hints: If you don’t have a shoe box make the animals on paper and use string for the bars on the cage!
