What is our theme? The weather

What is the lesson (overall purpose)? The children will learn that a tornado is a mass of whirling wind called a vortex.

MA Guidelines/Standards: Pre k E SS 2-5 Describe how the local weather changes from day to day and over the seasons and recognize patterns in those changes.

Learning Outcomes: The children will create a tornado in a plastic bottle

Songs, Books & Videos (Motivational Techniques): See attachment below

Materials: Plastic bottle, water, dish washing liquid

Activity (Procedure): 1. Fill a plastic bottle with water until it reaches around three quarters full
                                2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid
                                3. Turn bottle upside down and hold it by the neck
                                4. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds
                                5. Stop and look inside to see a mini tornado forming

Activity Wrap Up:Your child made their own tornado in a bottle

How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment): Have a discussion with your child about tornadoes and how these high wind vortexes can cause a lot of damage.

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications): Add food coloring to make colored tornados.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions): Make sure when you spin the bottle you make circular motions
