What is our theme? Weather Predictions using our 5 senses
What is the lesson?
Students will use their 5 senses as they learn about the weather
MA Guidelines:
*Sel3: Demonstrate confidence in their own abilities. Express independent thoughts and defend ideas.
*Sel5: The child will begin to recognize that different people have different reactions
*W.PK.1: Children can tell you words to express their opinion about a topic.
*SL.PK.1: Children can participate in conversation with peers and adults in small and large group settings.
*PreK-ESS2-4: Use simple instruments to collect and record data on elements of daily weather.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will use their five senses to observe and make predictions of the weather and weather patterns.
Songs, Books & Videos:
*Song: Weather Watcher: (tune of Frere Jacques):

Materials:
Paper
Writing instruments: crayons, colored pencils, markers
Activity - Discussion:
- Remind or review the senses by saying something like, “We use our senses to learn about the world around us. When we pay careful attention, or observe the world by listening, looking, hearing, smelling, and tasting, we are able to learn new things.”
- Ask students to think about different kinds of weather. Write a list of the different kinds of weather that the students come up with (e.g., sunny, cloudy, rain, snow, fog, etc.).Explain that today you will be using your five senses to make observations about the weather.
- Tell students that they will go outside and practice using their senses to learn about today’s weather.
- Take the class outside and have them sit in a large circle quietly. Ask them to close their eyes and listen. Have them share what they hear and record students thinking on a sheet of paper for reference.
- Continue by asking students to look carefully, smell, look, and even taste the air! Make sure to record many of the observations that the students make.
*Sing the “Weather Watcher” song: have each child take a turn using their senses to talk about the weather.
Activity Wrap Up:
Make a chart: Make 5 columns. Write at the top of each of the 5 columns, one of the senses (touch, taste, hear, see, smell). Then classify what sense you would use to explore different weather (ie. hear: thunder, see: lightening, feel: rain, wind, etc.).
How do I know what my child is learning?
Have a few students share their predictions. Model using the five senses by asking guiding questions such as “What might you see if it is sunny? What might you hear if it is raining?”
How can you extend this activity?
Bring a blanket outside and lay down on the blanket. After you see what the weather is, close your eyes and use your senses to feel, listen, smell and taste the weather around you.
Helpful Hints:
If the weather is wet, wear appropriate attire outside. Instead of using a blanket, bring a piece of plastic or tarp to sit/lay on
