Lesson/Activity Name: Let’s Pretend!
Overall Purpose: Hi Families...Today the children are going to pretend that they are flying through the clouds in an airplane They will be creating an airplane using either a box or laundry basket/open container (the sky's the limit...no pun intended) : )
Theme: Weather
LESSON
Learning Standard(s):
ESS2-3: Explore and describe different places water is found in the local environment.
APL4: The child will demonstrate creativity in thinking and use of materials. engage in imaginative play and storytelling in which children change or make up their own endings.
Learning Outcomes: This week we have talked about what clouds are, what they look like and today they are going to see what it feels like to fly through a cloud (or looking down on them).
What will you use to pair with lesson (i.e. a book, song, video etc):
Flying in and out of clouds from the cockpit and cabin https://youtu.be/JY4-D8qMtSc
What it is like to fly in an airplane https://youtu.be/zWrp3WE-fkA
Step by Step how to do the activity:
*Create an airplane using a box or a laundry basket.
*Place your airplane on top of pillows/cushions that are on the floor. (you can watch the above videos to feel like your airplane is really flying).
Materials:
*a box (that you will fit in) a laundry basket, a suitcase that is opened up (no top on it)
*pillow or cushions
Wrap-up: What were your reactions of flying through and on top of the clouds? How do the clouds look different when looking down on them? Do the clouds look the same?
Assessment: Talk to your child about their airplane experiences. Has your child ever been on an airplane? What are their memories of the experience? What was their first thing that they saw when they got to the airport? Did they have a window or an aisle seat?Did you see any clouds when you were in the airplane? Was your flight during the day or night? If they haven’t been on an airplane, ask them if someday they would like to go on an airplane. Is there an airport near your house, where you can and go look at the airplanes?
Ideas on how to extend this activity:If you are using a box, you can decorate your box to actually look like an airplane. You can add a seat belt inside, windows, wings, etc. If you would like siblings or family members to take a ride in your plane, you can make tickets and passports using paper.
Helpful Hints: If you don’t have a box or a laundry basket, do you have something that is low to the ground that your child can sit on? Can they balance their body/aircraft while sitting it on the top of a pillow or cushion?
