What is our theme? Introduction to meteorologist tools (we will touch more on them in upcoming weeks)
What is the lesson? For the children to learn about different materials that meteorologists use to learn about the weather.
MA Guidelines:
*APL-8: The child will be able to retain and recall information. To encourage children to reflect on material used and what they enjoyed.
*APL-4: The child will demonstrate creativity in thinking and using of materials. Engage in imaginative play, creatively expressing themselves through visual arts and writing.
Learning Outcomes:
There are many different types of tools that meteorologists use. A few examples are:
*Barometer
*Thermometer
*Wind Vane
*Rain Gauge
*Anemometer
*Ceilometer
Songs, Books & Videos:

Materials:
Ideas~
*reusable materials (cups, paper plates, straws, etc.)
*glue/tape
*permanent markers
*glass jars/containers
Activity:
*Watch the video’s above
*Combine 2 of your favorite above tools and create your own instrument. What would you call it? How did you make it?
Activity Wrap Up:
ach person's occupation (job) has tools that they use. What do you think meteorologists ' tools are made of? Where do you think they get them? Do they make them? or do they buy them? If they buy them...what kind of store do you think they would buy them at?
How do I know what my child is learning?
Something else to try: Take a walk around your neighborhood (or in town) see how many types of tools you can find that would help you read the weather. (ie. Tops of churches sometimes have weathervanes. Does the bank sign tell you the temperature? Are there windsocks where boats come in or planes land?)
How can you extend this activity?
If you can’t walk, can you drive around town looking for tools to help you learn more about the weather?
Helpful Hints:
If you don’t have any reusable materials at home to create your “tool”, can you sketch what you would make on a piece of paper?
