Hello Toddler Families!  Ms. Haley and I miss you all so much. We hope you are doing well and we look forward to doing some 'virtual learning' with you!

For the next few weeks we are going to focus on Seeds, Plants and Plant Growth. Spring is officially here and many are getting their gardens ready and starting their seedlings.

Day 1:
What is a seed?  A seed is what we put in the ground, cover with soil, and then water.  We can also plant seeds in flower pots inside to watch the grow. A seed will grow into a plant. Some plants produce fruit and vegetables that we eat, like carrots or strawberries, others produce flowers that we can smell and enjoy. A seed needs soil, water, sunlight, air and space so that it grows big and strong.

Watch the fun video and listen to the song to learn more about seeds

Day 2:
Let's look at some seeds and talk about how they grow!

Science Activity: With Mom or Dad, find some seeds from fruits or vegetables to examine. Tomato, orange, apple, lemon, cucumbers all have seeds. Do you notice how different they are? Some are big and others, like a strawberry, are very small. An avocado seed is very big!

Remember, a seed needs five important things in order for it to grow: soil, water. sunlight, air and space.

Watch this video of the needs of a plant

Day 3
Let's plant our own seeds! For this activity you will need a seed/seeds, (beans grow quickly, but any seed will be fun to watch!), paper towel, plastic bag, a spray water bottle, tape, and mom or dad's help..This activity will allow you to see the seed as it is growing!

Science: Fold the paper towel so it will easily fit in the plastic bag
Fill the spray bottle and have mom help you mist the towel until it's completely moist
Put the seed on top of the wet paper towel
Place the wet paper towel with the seed in the plastic bag and close the bag up tight!
Tape the plastic bag to a window.
Check each day to see if your seed has begun to sprout

Take a picture of your experiment and post it in the comments section so Ms Haley and I can see your seed!

Day 4
The Parts of a Plant Now that we know how a seed grows and the five important things they need to grow, (soil, water, sunlight, air and space), lets learn the parts of a plant!

A plant has several different parts, just like you do! A plant has the flower, stem, leaves and roots. Watch the video and listen to the song to learn the different parts of a plant.

Day 5
Review! Let's review what we have learned! First we learned about seeds. Seeds are what we plant that grow into flowers or vegetables or plants. Seeds need 5 things to grow big and strong. Do you remember the 5 things? Soil, water, sunlight, air and space! The seed grows into a plant and the plant has 4 different parts. Can you name them?  Flower, leaves, stem and roots!

Let's do an art project. You will need mom or dad's help. This project has some things you will already have in your home.

Art:  Making a flower

Remember to check on your plants each day. Take pictures of them so we can see. Take a picture of the flower you made too.

Come back to this page next week and I will have more lessons for you. Maybe I'll even make a surprise visit!

We miss you!

These are a variety of songs we use throughout the week.  The weather song we use almost every day :)
"What's the Weather?"
Sung to the tune of "Oh My Darling Clementine"

What's the weather? What's the Weather?
What's the weather everyone?
Is it raining?
Is it cloudy?
Is it snowing?
Or is there sun?

 "The More We Get Together"

The more we get together, together together
The more we get together
The happier we'll be.
For your friends are my friends
And my friends are your friends/
The more we get together
The happier we'll be.
(Child identifies the weather by looking out the windows. )
