Parts of a Tree Hunt
Overall Purpose: To review the different parts of a tree and provide a fun hands on experience for children to interact with natural tree materials.
Theme: Science, Trees

Pre-K-LS1-1 (MA). Compare, using descriptions and drawings, the external body parts of animals (including humans) and plants and explain functions of some of the observable body parts.
Behavioral Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
Child will know the names for different parts of a tree.
Child will experience seeing and holding various parts of a tree that they’ve found.

Wrap-up:
After reviewing items and discussing where they might be found on the tree diagram, do one last review of the tree diagram. Ask your child to tell you what each part is. Help them if they need it!
Assessment:
Was your child interested in exploring different parts of a tree?
During wrap up, was your child able to label the parts of a tree?
Modifications:
Always feel free to collect tree materials before this activity if you would like to keep your child inside or to speed this lesson up a bit. Allow them to explore each item and ask them to tell you where they think each item lives on the tree diagram.
Helpful Hints:
We had only just begun our tree unit really before school was closed! Your child may have forgotten the parts of the tree at this point… no worries if they need your help remembering the names. :)

- Start by reviewing your own tree diagram (printed out or hand drawn)
- Watch youtube link with Ms. Rachel
- Watch youtube link “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes for Trees!” for song
- Review diagram again
- Time for an outside adventure tree hunt! Ask your child to explore around the yard (or nature trail?), tell them they are on an important hunt for tree items! Look for sticks, seeds, moss, leaves, etc. Give your child 5-10 minutes.
- Investigate items found. Where is each item found on the tree diagram?
Materials:
- A way to watch youtube video links (computer, phone, ipad)
- Tree diagram Printout OR your own hand drawn version with labels (don’t worry...kids are usually open minded to art skills :)).
- Bag for Tree Hunt!
