Starting Play-doh for our birds nest! 4/13/20

Hello Families!  This is a great lesson for a rainy day!
Let’s make play-doh. We’ll use it for tomorrow’s lesson when we make our own bird nest! Have Fun!

What is our theme? Birds

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?
Making play-doh from materials we have at home so we can use it to make a bird’s nest tomorrow.

MA Guidelines/Standards:
SED2: The young toddler responds to directions from familiar adults
SED3 The young toddler relates to adults through shared exploration of materials and environments
SED6 The older toddler follows the directions of adults
CD60 The younger toddler experiments with various wet and dry materials to discover their properties
CD63 The older toddler uses simple tools to continue exploration
PW33 The young toddler coordinates eye and hand movements
PW35 The older toddler coordinates eye and hand movements

Learning Outcomes:
By mixing the play-doh ingredients together your child is beginning to form an early understanding of science and math concepts.

Songs, Books & Videos (Motivational Techniques)
https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-Playdough-Without-Cream-of-Tartar/

Materials Needed!
Flour (4 cups)
Salt  (1 ½ Cups
Oil     (2 Tablespoons)
Water (1 cup warm)
Food coloring (optional)
2 mixing bowls

Activity (Procedure):
To make your play-doh:

1. Pour 1 cup of warm water into your bowl. Add food coloring if you want to make your play-doh extra pretty!

2. Add 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil to the warm water and stir together

3. In a separate bowl combine 4 cups of flour and 1 ½ cups of salt. Stir together.

4. Add the flour mixture to the water and mix until a soft dough forms.

5. On a floured surface, knead the play doh until soft and smooth.

6. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Activity Wrap Up:
Tomorrow we are going to use the play-doh we made to make a bird’s nest.
Did you enjoy mixing all the ingredients together? Did you use a spoon or your hands? What did it feel like?

How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment)
Molding play doh is excellent for the development of fine motor skills

Making play-doh is an opportunity to enrich vocabulary with words such as ROLL, MOLD, KNEAD, MIX, SCULPT, MEASURE

Following a recipe introduces your child to science as they see that combining materials changes the way they look...and perhaps smell. By kneading the play-doh, the texture will change as well.

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)

In addition to adding food coloring, you may add some essential oils if you have any. This will change the way the play-doh smells.

The recipe can be made larger or smaller. Perhaps you want to divide into multiple bowls (as the video shows) to make different colors.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
This is a basic recipe for play-doh.  If you don’t want to use “food” ingredients such as flour and salt, the following recipe uses shaving cream and corn starch. https://www.naturalbeachliving.com/shaving-cream-play-dough-recipe/

Bird Nature Hunt!

4/8/2020

Hello Toddler Families!

"Let's take a nature walk to listen and look for different birds in our neighborhood/yard!"  This is an outdoor activity as we search for birds outside.  First, start with the video book read by Ms. Naomi (posted at the bottom of this lesson) then gather materials and follow the "procedure" for a bird nature hunt!  There are extra materials attached to this plan for families to utilize just for fun!

lesson/Activity Name:  Bird Nature Hunt
Overall Purpose:  Observing the sounds of birds in the area we live and what they look like.
Theme:  Spring and Birds
LESSON
Learning Standard(s):
CD61 The younger toddler discovers living things found in nature
CD64 The older toddler observes and identifies living things and begins to identify their basic needs
CD78 The older toddler notices similarities and differences in others
Behavioral Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
Children will learn that each bird makes a different sound
Children will experience viewing birds in their natural habitats

Motivational Techniques: (What will you use to pair with lesson (i.e. a book, song, video etc)

“Birds” :Video of read aloud by Ms. Naomi
https://youtu.be/rYoZgpAEkFs Video of Bird Songs
https://youtu.be/WhRpW0cVmds Video: Birds Names and Sounds
https://youtu.be/obSaQxGPU7E Video:  Once I Saw a Little Bird
https://youtu.be/wCycxuYqPiU Book: Birds

Procedures: (Step by Step how to do the activity)
Take a nature walk around the neighborhood and look and listen for birds. Remember to look in the trees, on the ground, in the neighbor’s yard. Have mom or dad write down how many birds you see and the colors they were. Listen for their sounds.

Materials:
Notebook or paper
Pen or pencil
Binoculars ( if you have some)

Wrap-up:
Were you able to see and hear any birds on your walk?
Did your child recognize any birds from the videos or the book Ms. Naomi read?
If binoculars were available, was your child able to observe a bird “up close?”
How many birds were you able to see? Did mom/dad keep count?

Assessment:
Does your child understand that birds come in many different colors and sizes? Review the videos and point out all the different birds you see.
Remind your child that each bird makes a different sound. Were they able to hear different bird songs while out walking?

Modifications:
Take a drive to a pond closeby to see if there are any ducks, geese, or swans to observe rather than taking a walk around the neighborhood.
If the weather isn’t cooperating and you are unable to go for a walk, review the YouTube video about birds. If you have a bird feeder in your yard, sit and observe out the window for a bit to see what birds come to eat.

Helpful Hints:
Some children may be a bit scared of birds. If your child is one, take time to watch the video a few times before going on your nature walk.Reassure them that the birds will be far enough away to cause no harm.

LESSON Exploring and Examining Seeds
Overall Purpose:
To Introduce children to seeds, plants and plant growth

Theme:  Seeds: Examining different seeds

Learning Standard(s):
Language and Communication : learning new words and definitions SEED, COMPARE, DIFFERENT, SAME,BIG LITTLE,
Cognitive: The toddler explores with materials and discovers mathematical concepts; the toddler develops early scientific skills through exploration and discovery
Approaches to Learning: The toddler shows eagerness and curiosity as a learner

Behavioral Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
The children will learn that there are a variety of different kinds of seeds by exploring seed packets. The child will learn that seeds come in all different sizes and shapes.

Motivational Techniques: (What will you use to pair with lesson (i.e. a book, song, video etc)
Book: What Happens Next? Seed to Plant (read by RIley on video)
Music: The Seed Song https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=the+seed+song+from+spring+assembly
Video: https://youtu.be/DL5BVcBxCZs

Procedures: (Step by Step how to do the activity)
Open up the different seed packets and put on the towel or paper plate
With your child, examine the different seeds and discuss what they look like. (size, color, etc)

Materials:
Store bought seed packets : flowers and vegetables
Paper towel or paper plate

Wrap-up:
All seeds are different . Ask your child to tell you the differences and similarities of the seeds you are looking at. Are some big? Tiny ones? Are they all the same color or are some different? Are some round while others are oval?
Show your child which seed came from which seed packet and what the seed will look like once it grows into the flower/plant

Assessment:
Place two different seeds side by side. Have your child show you which seed is the biggest. Which seed is the smallest.
Have your child point out if he/she notices a difference in the color of each seed.  Are some brown, black or white?

Modifications:
If seed packets are unavailable, look at the seeds found in the vegetables you may have;  Strawberries, apples, oranges, green beans, avocado, or bird seed

Helpful Hints:
If no seeds are available to explore, google search “Seeds” and many images will appear.  Compare the different pictures with your child.
