Take off with Rockets!

Our Theme: Transportation!

What is our lesson? Rocket ship!

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To learn about rocket ships and what they are used for?
This is also a great way to work on fine motor skills.

MA Guidelines/Standards:
PW36.Toddler controls small muscles in hand.
CD66.Toddler explores with sensory art materials and uses them to create visual effects.
CD69. Toddler creatively explores and experiments using a variety of sensory materials and mediums.

Learning Outcomes:
I would like the child to learn about rocket ships and how they are used for transportation? The similarities and the differences to other forms of transportation.

Materials:
Paper Towel Roll-Foil-Paper-stickers 
Tissue Paper-Glue-Foil-Tissue Paper 

Activity (Procedure):
Wrap paper towel roll in foil smoothing out the bumps.
Form a foil roof, place on the top of the paper towel roll and glue. Decorate with stickers and make a flame on the bottom from orange tissue paper. Glue flame in the inside bottom and leave to dry. Rockets can be displayed in the house or outside.

Activity Wrap Up:
Can you identify what rocket looks like and what they are used for? Talk about where and when you would see them?

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different materials to see how to produce a variety of effects. What works and what does not?

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you're having a hard time gluing the foil roof,you can double a Triangle shape and tape to the top.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If no paper towel roll you can use a toilet paper roll.
If there is no tissue paper you can use orange paper for flame at bottom.

Learning about boats and making a coffee filter boat with popsicle sticks, paper, markers, and glue!

What is our theme? 
Transportation

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
Learning what can take us to different places and be creative in making a boat. 

MA Guidelines/Standards:
CD66. The younger toddler explores with sensory art materials and uses them to create visual effects.
PW32. The older toddler moves the body with purpose to achieve a goal.

Learning Outcomes:
Encourage creativity in using materials rather than imposing limits on how materials can be used.

Materials:
2 Coffee filter 
Paper
Glue
marker/ watercolor paint
Popsicle
Spray coffee filter with water (optional) 

Activity (Procedure):
Color both coffee filter with markers, paint, 
Fold coffee filter in half and glue it on paper
Glue popsicle stick on top
Fold the other into triangle and glue to the top of popsicle stick


Activity Wrap Up:
Can talk about boats and where they travel (water). If the child has experience riding on a boat, see if they can tell you the story about it.

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Let them explore the materials and be creative. 

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
You can use paper plates, tissue paper, paper towels, instead of coffee filters, I used markers and dotter paint and sprayed a small squire of water. 


Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
The pitfall is if you do spray with water make sure it is in/on something that you are fine with being colored. The color will leak through. The Solution is to put it on a tray, paper plate, or ect.

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To become familiar with airplanes and learn about force 
and motion.

Learning Outcomes:
I would like the child to learn about airplanes and what their function is? Talking about how they can be different or the same. This is a great way to work on fine motor skills.

Materials:
Clothespin-Paint-Scissors
3 flat Popsicle sticks-Paint
Small Paint brush-Glue  

Activity (Procedure):
Have the child paint the clothes pin their favorite color.
Cut Small strips of tape and place onto the flat popsicle sticks. Glue the popsicle sticks onto the clothespin at the top,and underneath (looks like wings).Then glue the last popsicle stick at the bottom of the clothespin on top. Experiment flying your plane either inside or out? Now you have your very own Plane!

Activity Wrap Up:
What can you identify about your plane? Talk about different parts and what helps the plane to fly?

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different materials to discover the different outcomes? Does using different materials have a different effect on the plane as it flies? 

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If the plane does not fly,you can change the wings,by moving them to another area on the plane.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If the popsicle sticks do not stick to the clothespin, use tape to help strengthen them.

To learn about different ways to travel.

Learning Outcomes:
To be creative in making a hot air balloon and learn how it can take you to different places whether it's in the sky, water, or land.

Can talk about other things that travel in the sky. Share stories of riding an airplane. 

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Use terms and gestures to reinforce directional terms, such as pointing up, while saying, “The ball went up in the air.”

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)

If you do not have paper plates use paper in a circle. I have seen using a balloon and tying string to a square.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
The pitfall I had was gluing string, the solution was I used popsicle sticks.

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To have the child become familiar with Bicycles and how their movement can transport them to their destination.

Learning Outcomes:
I would like the child to become aware of different kinds of bikes and what they are used for? Talk about the similarities and differences between them?

Materials:
Small Bike-Large plastic Table Cloth-Tape
Colored Paint-Large Sponges-4 Long Trays

Activity (Procedure):
This is an outdoor activity,parents may need to help set it up? Place a large plastic table cloth on the flat part of the ground and turn it over to the white side. Tape the corners with strong tape to hold the tablecloth in place. Pour the different paint into the trays. With the sponge apply the paint to the wheels of the child's small bike. Direct the child to start riding the bike along and around the table cloth, making different swirls and lines.

Activity Wrap Up:
Can the child Identify what they feel like and if they are big or small? Have them talk about what they saw?

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different materials and different bicycles to produce a variety of effects.

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you are having a hard time because the plastic tablecloth keeps moving,you can tape it to the ground and this will stop the movement while riding the bicycle. 

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If you can't get outside,place large paper on a tiled floor and use small toys with wheels to make swirls and lines.

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To become familiar with Arctic Seals and their survival in the environment.

I would like the child to learn about Arctic seals, where they live and what they eat?

Materials:
Large Bowl-Ice Cubes-Crisco.
PLastic Glove-Saran Wrap.

Activity (Procedure)
Place ice cubes in a large bowl. Have the child place a plastic glove on their hand and cover thickly with crisco(lard) and wrap in saran wrap. Have the child dip the gloved hand into the bowl of ice asking them if they feel the  freezing water. The glove with the crisco wrapped in saran wrap has the effect of an insulation (blubber)that an Arctic seal has on its body?


Activity Wrap Up:
Identifying Arctic seals and talking about how they are similar to other Seals but different.

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different materials and experiment to see if they have the same effects as before?

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you are having a hard time with the saran wrap staying on your hand,you can use a small freezer bag.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
If you don't have ice cubes,you can place water in a freezer before using.

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To explore what is in and around the ocean.

CD60. The younger toddler experiments with various wet and dry materials to discover their properties.
PW33. The young toddler coordinates eye and hand movements.

Learning Outcomes:
The toddler develops an ability to control and refine small muscles (fine motor).

Sand

Shovel

Activity (Procedure):
Best to go to the beach
Bring bucket and shovel
Make sure the sand is little wet 
Fill bucket and dump it out when filled


Activity Wrap Up:
Can talk about how they made their castle and what other things they see or feel.


How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
The toddler develops early scientific skills through exploration and discovery.


How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you can't go to the beach, build it in a sandbox or table.
You could also use playdough, fill the bucket up using a shovel or spoon or use pinch technique with fingers and dump them out.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
The pitfalls can be the sand is not wet enough or it's too wet, other is if they use a large bucket it will be too heavy. Soulutions mix some water and sand together to find the right mixture, and use a small bucket or get help from parents.

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To become familiar with Whales that live in our ocean. Also this is a great way to work on fine motor skills.

CD64. Toddler observes and identifies living things and identifies their basic needs.
CD63. Toddler uses simple tools to continue exploration.

Learning Outcomes:
I would like the children to become aware of the different kinds of Whales in the ocean and the similarities and differences between the whales.

Materials:
Brown Paper Bag-Newspaper-Colored Markers 
Rubber Band-Foil

Activity (Procedure):
Have your child draw an eye on each side of the paper bag. Have them color the sides and draw a mouth.
Tear the newspaper into pieces and crumple it up. Open the bag up and fill the bag up with the newspaper creating a full body. Twist the bag end and place the band on.Take foil pieces and place it through top of the paper bag to make a spout.



Activity Wrap Up:
Can you identify any of the Whales after watching the Educational video. Talk about what you saw and how each Whale looks the same but different.

How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment)
Experiment with different materials to see what the outcomes are? 

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If there is no Newspaper,you can use a plastic bag for the inside of the Whale. If there is no pipe cleaners,q tips
may be used for the spout.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
To stop the paper bag from ripping, you can double the bags.

To be creative using different materials, while exploring the beaches around us.

Learning Outcomes:
Discovers creative expression through music, drama, dance and art experiences. The toddler develops skills that will become healthy practices for life.

Blue paint
Aluminum foil
Cardboard or something sturdy to wrap the foil around
Stickers (optional)

Activity (Procedure):
Parent with help wrap foil around sturdy object 
Help put paint on foil
The child will move paint around with fingers

Activity Wrap Up:
The child will wash hands and can show parents what they created

How do I know what my child is learning? (Assessment)
Paint on different surfaces, such as large and small boxes, corrugated paper, wax paper, foil, and sandpaper. 

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
They could add things like shaving cream, glue sand/shells, or stickers of sea animals

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
The pitfalls are taking the foil off the sturdy object, using something that you do not have to take the foil off (I am using cereal box, another example is use the glass of picture frame that way you can put it back in the frame and put it on the wall)

What is the lesson (overall purpose)?  
To become familiar with the ocean and how important it is for all the creatures that live in it.

Learning Outcomes:
I would like the children to become aware of different kinds of creatures that live in the ocean and how important it is to our planet.

Materials:
A large plastic bottle-water
blue food coloring-baby Oil
Sand-shells-super-glue.

Activity (Procedure):
Children will need some help from parents. Fill half of the bottle with water and food coloring. Swirl and mix, Once 
the water has settled down,add the baby oil slowly. Add the sand and shells and mix together. Place glue to the inside of the lid and screw on tightly. Leave the bottle to sit for a few hours before tilting it up and down.

Activity (Wrap Up):
Can the children identify some of the creatures that are in the Ocean and in what way is it important to our planet? 

How do I know what my child is learning(Assessment)
Experiment with different material and discover the different ways they can produce a variety of effects?

How can you extend this activity? (Modifications)
If you have no big plastic bottle,you can use a small one. If there is no baby oil you can just use the water. If there is no food coloring blue paint can be used.

Helpful Hints: (Pitfalls & Solutions)
The water could leak from the lid, adding strong tape to the top of the lid will secure it more.
